During the first year of AutoCAD’s life, the user interface was rudimentary. A rudimentary user interface, such as the AutoCAD 80 version, limited the functionality of the software and made the application relatively difficult to use. From its inception, AutoCAD remained a niche market product until the mid-1990s. The software was largely used by architecture firms, engineers and technicians, civil engineers, and mechanical, industrial and electrical engineers, and later, architects, interior designers, and interior decorators. AutoCAD initially used vector graphics rendering to draw 2D, 3D and 4D objects. However, it was soon discovered that AutoCAD’s non-standard Vector Graphics (VGR) format posed a significant limitation on the use of the software. In 2000, the Autodesk Graphics Engine (AGE), a new 2D graphics API in AutoCAD 2000, was introduced to the marketplace. It allowed AutoCAD 2000 to render a 3D model much faster than the VGR format, which ran at a maximum of 15 frames per second. AutoCAD 2001 introduced another major change to the user interface, with a new ribbon-based interface. This change would eventually be incorporated into all AutoCAD versions to date, and would be adopted by other major CAD programs, including AutoCAD LT, MicroStation, and Magics. AutoCAD 2004 introduced several enhancements to the interface. Improvements included a simplified user interface, and a new mouse-driven interface that replaced the traditional menu-driven menu. AutoCAD 2005 introduced a number of key new features, including improved text import and editing functions, path tools, 3D objects, 3D solids, and parametric surfaces. AutoCAD 2006 introduced a number of new features, including robust editing tools, new ribbon-based tools, several new drawing commands, a change of control method (such as all controls being on the ribbon or all controls on the menu bar), more complex user-interface elements, and improved drawing speed. AutoCAD 2007 introduced several new features, including a new curve tool, parametric surfaces, new professional drawing tools, the ability to automatically create and edit external references, improved drawing speed, improved interface responsiveness, improved angle and axis operations, and new watertight modeling tools. AutoCAD 2010 introduced several new features, including the ability to create custom menus and toolbars, improved drawing

End user support Most Autodesk products, including AutoCAD, have detailed documentation that can be found in the Autodesk Help system. When used with an active network connection, many articles and tutorials can be accessed and downloaded from the Autodesk Exchange. When using online help, extensive search facilities can be used to find specific topics or answers. AutoCAD includes extensive training software which is used by Autodesk to train engineers and architects. AutoCAD LT provides more limited support and has very little in the way of documentation; this product may be suitable for an entry-level user who does not require much of the functionality of AutoCAD. Windows and Linux support Autodesk also provides a beta software package called the Autodesk Beta Network, which allows users of Windows and Linux operating systems to access AutoCAD software. A package is available for free on the Mac, but is not available for Windows. Interoperability AutoCAD supports a wide variety of file formats, including other AutoCAD files, PDF, SVG, DXF, DWF, DWG, IGES, IGES, STEP and Parasolid. It also supports the following CAD file standards: IGES, CAD/CAM, ANS, STL, IGES, Parasolid, STL, and ACIS. Another particular advantage of the invention is that the surface treated polyolefin resin material is a homogeneous thermoplastic material, unlike the surface treatment products of the prior art which are limited to certain types of polymers. Another particular advantage of the invention is that the surface treatment is accomplished in the presence of a non-inert atmosphere to avoid 3813325f96

Drawing Improvements: Redesigned complex tools are easier to use and better at their jobs. The new drawing tools include: Dynamic grabbers: Draw freehand, using gesture-driven tools that dynamically adapt to your drawing. Freehand: Draw freehand lines, arcs, and surfaces. (video: 1:45 min.) Dynamic picking: Use the pick tool to modify your drawing by interactively re-picking the selected object. Picking assistant: Use the pick tool to select objects in complex drawings, then send and apply the selection by dragging it from one object to another. Pick new: Add objects to a drawing by pressing a single button, and easily move them from one place to another. Snap to: Add or snap objects to a drawing by clicking their bounding boxes. Layer palette: Open the Layer palette for easy access to your drawing layers. (video: 2:15 min.) Linework improvements: Draw lines that are either closed, open, or both. Offset by arbitrary angle or distance: Make changes to an object’s position, rotation, or scale and move it by a different amount. Move or copy to a new layer: Use the Move or Copy tool to move or copy drawing objects to another layer. Duplicate layer: Take multiple copies of an existing layer. Merge layers: Combine multiple drawing layers into a single drawing. Multi-style linework: Use a flexible drawing style, with multiple style parameters. (video: 3:01 min.)
