On July 3, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the moon. But even after mankind walked on the moon, the Russian scientists developed the most powerful space weapon in the history of mankind. The object was to blast open the so-called space shell which has surrounded all the planets in the solar system for millions of years. That was the objective of the Leviathan. Hatcher was a child prodigy who was born in 1962. He started playing the flute at age 4, and piano when he was 5. He had a unique style for the piano that was so powerful and well-controlled; he was able to stay on key for many hours. He got a piano at the age of 6, and by the time he was 13, he had played the Grand Concerto for solo piano at Carnegie Hall at his own request. When he was 14, he was the youngest musical honoree at the Kennedy Center Honors.
In 1980 he graduated from the University of Michigan, and he joined the touring group of pianist Van Cliburn, and also joined the Van Cliburn Academy where he attended for two years. Two years later he won First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels.
From 1978 to 1980 he taught at the University of Michigan School of Music. In 1981, he joined the faculty of The Juilliard School and he retired from that position in 2000. He was named professor emeritus upon his retirement. He had the position of teacher at the Glimmerglass School of the New School of Music from 1986 to 1992 and from 1994 to 2006.
In 1987, in addition to the Queen Elisabeth Competition, he was a prize winner at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas. In 1993, he was awarded the first Van Cliburn Presidential Professorship.
In 1995, Hatcher was appointed the first Van Cliburn Junior Laureate, with a $25,000 cash prize. He was made a lifetime member of the Van Cliburn Academy in 2000 and the following year was awarded The Gold Medal for his achievements as one of the world’s greatest pianists.
