Two sets of experiments were conducted: (i) hydrolysis without aeration (anaerobic reaction) and (ii) EED and hydrolysis with aeration (aerobic reaction). The results show that the composition of the biogas produced by EED was different from that produced by thermal hydrolysis. The biogas produced by EED contained a smaller amount of H2, higher content of CO2, and greater fraction of CH4, which are considered beneficial characteristics. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the effluent was decreased by 43.2% by EED, and the removal efficiencies were 72.7% and 71.5% at total suspended solids (TSS) loading rates of 5 and 10 g/L, respectively. At the operating condition of EED, H2S, SO2, and NOX were not detected and NH3 was below the detection limit. EED showed significantly higher degradation rates and lower inhibitory effects on methanogenic activities than thermal hydrolysis. The results from this study indicate that EED can be used as a pretreatment of anaerobic digestion to degrade polysaccharides and proteins in sludge. The favorable characteristics of biogas generated by the EED process make it a suitable alternative to the current thermal hydrolysis process, with applications to methanogenic digestion of domestic sewage sludge.Agonists are the most common class of therapeutic agents used in treating disease.
