There is another, even faster way to get round. Use a drinking glass or other perfect circle of a smaller diameter than the globe radius. Place it on the globe as you are turning, even before you remove the ends. It will show you the high and lows very quickly, and accurately. Makes turning a globe very fast. And try sanding sealer on redwood/sequoia of get a more even finish.
I like just the sound of you woodworking, without any music.

I would love to see you use this technique to make a bowling ball. Maybe laminating different Woods to make cool pattern and strengthen the ball.
Adam Savage actually has a neat lathe accessory for turning precise spheres: https://youtu.be/i8GD33DsRw8?t=1015
I've got an old video saved in my favorites of a guy making wood spheres by hand for puppet eyeballs. He got it done with something like a homemade hole saw which he held in hand and used to take the high spots off a cube similar to what you've done here. What I found most interesting is that you could make spheres of a much larger diameter than the hole saw tool you were working with.
It looks like over several years of collecting tools you've arrived at the "right size" that being large and, as an alternative, humongous.
Now you can try to make a scale representation of the solar system
Could you spray the finish on while the sphere is spinning on the lathe? Rotating it like you've been doing?
Perhaps try finishing with "five second" glue. I saw some pen maker using that on the lathe, just dripping on at low speed and evening with a rag while spinning.
OK, now I have to go out in the shop and try this, myself.
Simply beautiful.
Beautiful texture, just stunned.
You made a model planet!
Now you need Peter Brown ring frisbee and you can make a model of Saturn!
as always….thank you Frank
Now we know how the wooden balls from Minority Report are made…
was hoping of spinning it on table 🙂
Thanks Frank. That is the method that I could use.
It's beautiful!
Maybe the next time you could try using spray paint between rotating the ball so you could see what you turned away and when you hit your low spot.
You are a super master !!!

Thanks for sharing this method. Are you going to try any other species?
Nice Job Frank
