Wood Turned Peppermint Christmas Ornament

This year’s Christmas ornament is inspired by a peppermint candy. It is a twisted striped segmented woodturned sphere. To make the ornament, I made a tall cylinder of thin segments of alternating padauk and maple wood. Next, I sliced this cylinder into sections and glued the sections back together with a twist in the pattern of alternating woods. Then I wood turned this cylinder into a sphere and made the ornament.

  1. Hi Frank . i am from Greece and i am a huge fun og you you are amazing . every time I am surprised with your ideas and your work. congratulations. you have inspired me to do some of your work a lot of times, but it is very difficult for me even if I make some woodwork in my spare time.

  2. Absolutely gorgeous Frank. Your video production has always been top notch, but this one particularly stands out! The use of 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas' played on a music box and the stop motion peppermint candies between each day are a lovely touch too 🙂

  3. I think you might have missed the point of the “economy bowl” that you mentioned at the beginning where you cut rings out of a flat board to make a spherical piece. But I know you’re not super strapped for nice wood so no worries.

  4. A quick trick if you want to try the string hanging method in the future: drill both of your holes, start the string into the first hole, and using a air gun blow compressed air in the hole with the string, it will drag the string in with it and out the other hole.

  5. I'd have been tempted to put something inside, something small like a small photo of you and the kids and in years to come if it ever got broken it would be a nice surprise
